Saudi Oil Strikes & Rising Prices: What to Know

Good afternoon,

As we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11, I want to begin by remembering the lives lost, the families who still carry that loss, and the first responders and everyday Americans who showed extraordinary courage that day and in the days that followed. Twenty-five years later, it is still a moment that asks us to remember, to be grateful, and to value the strength that comes from standing together.

Today also marks one year since the assassination of Charlie Kirk. As we remember his life, his faith, and the impact he had on so many people, I’m reminded of the words of Matthew 25:23: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family and all those who continue to feel his loss.

This week’s energy stories are a reminder of how connected our world has become. Ukraine struck Russia’s key Black Sea oil port at Novorossiysk, U.S. Energy Development Corp. continued to add assets in the Permian, and natural gas is becoming a bigger part of the conversation around powering data centers and AI.

Each of these stories is different, but together they show how closely energy, infrastructure, and global events are tied to everyday life.

Keep reading this week’s The Upside  for a closer look at the stories shaping the energy market.

Oil and Gas News

Saudi Attacks Push Oil Above $100
Fresh attacks on Saudi Arabian energy facilities are adding another layer of risk to an already tight global oil market. Several facilities in southern Saudi Arabia were hit Tuesday, causing fires, injuries and temporary shutdowns.

Saudi Aramco’s 400,000-barrel-per-day Jazan refinery has also been targeted multiple times as fighting with the Houthis intensifies. That refinery is especially important because Saudi Arabia has been moving more barrels toward the Red Sea as an alternative to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The market is paying attention. Brent crude was approaching $110 a barrel Thursday, while WTI moved above $100.

This is bigger than one refinery or one attack. The world depends on the Middle East for a significant amount of its oil supply, and we are seeing risks build around multiple key shipping routes and production centers at the same time. When you have this much geopolitical uncertainty layered onto a tight energy market, it does not take a major supply disruption to move oil prices quickly.

Natural Gas is Becoming the Power Behind AI
Gas-fired power deals are picking up across the country as data centers search for reliable electricity and faster ways to bring new capacity online.

PowerTransitions just acquired the 1,242 MW Roseton Generating Facility in New York, bringing its operating portfolio to about 1.8 GW. The company sees existing gas plants, grid connections and infrastructure as a strong foundation for larger energy campuses.

We are seeing the same trend elsewhere. Kodiak Gas Services is moving toward as much as 1.8 GW of gas turbine generation for behind-the-meter data centers, while Cipher Digital is building natural gas pipeline connections that could support up to 2.5 GW of on-site generation.

AI and data centers need massive amounts of dependable power, and they cannot always wait years for traditional grid connections. Natural gas can provide reliable, scalable power much faster, which is making it an increasingly important part of the data center buildout.

Ukraine Hits Russia’s Key Black Sea Oil Port
Ukraine launched another major drone attack on Novorossiysk, Russia’s most important oil export port on the Black Sea. The strike reportedly damaged infrastructure and sparked a fire at a fuel oil terminal.

This matters well beyond Russia. Novorossiysk is also the export point for the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which carries more than 80% of Kazakhstan’s crude exports. Major international producers, including Chevron and ExxonMobil, depend on that route to move oil into the global market.

Ukraine has continued to target Russia’s energy infrastructure, including the Ust-Luga export terminal and multiple refineries. Those attacks are putting additional pressure on Russian refining and fuel supplies, leading Russia to extend restrictions on diesel exports through September.

The bigger picture is simple. Energy infrastructure is increasingly becoming part of the battlefield. Every refinery, pipeline, port and export terminal that goes offline reduces flexibility in a global oil market that does not have much room for disruption. That keeps geopolitical risk firmly built into oil and diesel prices.

U.S. Energy Keeps Buying in the Permian
U.S. Energy Development Corp. has already completed about $550 million in acquisitions and joint ventures this year, adding 175 wells across Texas, New Mexico, North Dakota and Wyoming.

About 95% of that activity has been concentrated in the Permian Basin, especially the Delaware. The company is targeting a mix of producing assets and future drilling inventory, with its ideal deal made up of roughly 60% to 70% production and 30% to 40% undeveloped locations.

What stands out to me is the amount of capital still looking for quality oil and gas assets. U.S. Energy expects to deploy about $1 billion this year and potentially $1.1 billion to $1.4 billion in 2027.

They have reviewed more than 500 opportunities this year alone. That tells you the A&D market is active, buyers are being selective, and proven production with development upside continues to attract serious capital.
