Gas Power Stages a Comeback

Newsletter No. 133

Good afternoon,

I am beginning this newsletter on a somber note. Today, September 11, marks 24 years since the attacks on our nation, a day we will never forget. May we always honor the lives lost and the resilience that followed. We are also saddened by the tragic loss of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, who was killed in a campus shooting in Utah yesterday. At just 31, his voice and influence reached millions, and his passing will be deeply felt. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who mourn.

Oil and Gas News

U.S. Oil and Fuel Supplies Grow, Prices React to World Events
America’s oil stockpiles grew by about 1.25 million barrels at the end of August, with emergency reserves also ticking up slightly. Gasoline and diesel supplies rose too, though they’re still running lower than normal for this time of year. Oil prices jumped early in the day, helped by OPEC+ limiting output and new tensions in the Middle East—but later gave back some of those gains.

Gas Power Stages a Comeback
Natural gas is making a big return in U.S. electricity. New gas plants are being built at record levels because the country needs more reliable power, especially for energy-hungry AI data centers.

Unlike wind and solar, gas plants can run all day and night, which makes them more dependable. The challenge is getting enough gas turbines built and keeping costs down, but companies are already ramping up production.

With natural gas already powering about 4 out of 10 U.S. homes and businesses, its role is set to grow even more as demand for steady electricity rises.

Moves to Watch

Diversified Energy Buys Canvas Energy for $550 Million
Diversified Energy is spending $550 million to buy Canvas Energy, an oil and gas company in Oklahoma. The deal gives Diversified more land, hundreds of wells, and steady production in the Anadarko Basin. The company says the purchase will make them bigger, more efficient, and bring in more cash. This comes just months after Diversified bought another big energy company for $1.3 billion, showing how much buying and selling is picking up in Oklahoma’s oil and gas industry.
