Oil Traders Buy Record Options as Middle East Tensions Rise
Oil traders are snapping up options contracts for Brent Crude at a record pace due to fears of rising conflict in the Middle East. So far in October, the number of these contracts has jumped over 25%, hitting more than 4 million. Concerns are growing after missile attacks and possible military responses. While OPEC has enough spare production to help keep prices steady, analysts warn that further escalation could lead to big price increases.
Aramco CEO: Oil Demand Will Remain Strong for Decades
Amin Nasser, the CEO of Saudi Aramco, believes that oil demand will stay high for many years, especially from developing countries as their living standards improve. He pointed out that China’s need for oil, particularly for chemicals and jet fuel, is growing due to recent economic support measures. Nasser cautioned against expecting a fast decline in oil demand and stressed the need for energy security and affordability. He estimated that over 100 million barrels of oil per day will still be necessary by 2050, which is much higher than some forecasts suggest. He advocated for using a mix of energy sources to meet climate goals.
Oil Prices Hold Steady Despite Rising Inventories
U.S. crude oil supplies went up by 1.643 million barrels for the week ending October 18, more than expected. This comes after a drop of 1.58 million barrels the week before. Despite the inventory increase, oil prices stayed steady, with Brent Crude at $75.73 and WTI at $72.24. Gasoline and diesel supplies dropped, showing tighter availability. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve also increased slightly to 384.6 million barrels, but it's still much lower than when President Biden took office. You can see the up-to-the-minute commodities numbers here.

Shell Buys Rhode Island Power Plant to Grow in New England
Shell Energy has purchased a power plant in Rhode Island to strengthen its presence in the New England energy market. This deal will help Shell take advantage of trading opportunities. However, the company hit a roadblock when Nigeria rejected its attempt to sell oil and gas assets in the Niger Delta, making it harder for Shell to exit that troubled market.
