Latest Blog: New Legislation Impacts U.S. Oil & Gas
A new law, the "One Big Beautiful Bill" (OBBBA), recently signed on July 4, 2025, introduces significant changes to U.S. energy and tax policies. These changes are designed to influence domestic oil and gas production and may create new considerations for investors in the sector. Our blog post details the key provisions, including aspects related to production incentives, tax benefits for investors, and shifts in national energy policy.
To learn more about what this bill could mean for the U.S. oil and gas industry and potential investment opportunities, read my latest blog here.
Oil and Gas News
Trump’s New Trade Deals Boost U.S. Oil and Gas Exports
President Trump has signed three major trade deals—with Indonesia, the Philippines, and Japan—to grow the U.S. economy and expand oil and gas exports. These deals are part of his “America First” plan to help U.S. workers and businesses by selling more energy and products overseas while bringing in more money from tariffs (import taxes).
Here’s what each deal includes:
-
Indonesia: Will lower trade barriers so the U.S. can sell more oil, natural gas, and manufactured goods. In return, the U.S. will invest in Indonesia’s energy systems.
-
Philippines: The U.S. will provide support for renewable energy projects there and, in return, will be able to sell more American oil and gas equipment.
-
Japan: Agreed to a lower 15% tariff on imports (down from threat of 25%) and will buy more U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other energy products.
These deals are helping push U.S. tariff revenues to over $100 billion in 2025, a record high. That money is being used for energy and infrastructure improvements.
While some people worry tariffs could raise prices, Trump says the deals are fair and help U.S. energy companies, workers, and the economy overall.
Trump Hints at Alaska LNG Deal with Japan
President Trump suggested the U.S. and Japan are close to a deal on a major natural gas project in Alaska, even as they wrapped up a large trade agreement. He mentioned that Japan is "all set" to join a venture for liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Alaska. However, Japanese officials haven't confirmed this yet and are checking his comments. Japanese companies have previously worried about the high costs of the $44 billion Alaska LNG project. Meanwhile, India is reportedly interested in buying gas from it, and the project's developers claim many companies want to buy over $100 billion worth of its gas.
Mach Natural Resources Invests Heavily in San Juan Gas and Permian Oil
Mach Natural Resources, led by Tom Ward, is making a major $1.3 billion move, including a $787 million deal for gas assets in the San Juan Basin. Ward sees huge potential there, especially with new 3-mile drilling techniques for natural gas, as gas prices are now higher.
They're also buying $500 million in oil assets in the Permian Basin from Sabinal Energy. While the San Juan offers immediate drilling opportunities, the Permian deal brings stable oil production and strong cash flow. Mach plans to cut operating costs in the Permian, just as they've done with previous purchases. Both deals are expected to finalize this fall.
Iran Faces Power Outages and Protests While Oil Exports Boom
People in Iran are protesting in the streets because of long power and water outages during a severe heatwave, with temperatures over 118°F (48°C). The government shut down offices in several areas to save energy and asked people to use less water. Power cuts are now hitting big cities too, not just small towns. At the same time, Iran is exporting more oil than it has in years—about 1.9 million barrels a day—mostly to China. This is happening even though the country is under U.S. and European sanctions. The government seems to be focusing on selling oil abroad, even while people at home struggle with blackouts. Meanwhile, Iran is also getting ready for nuclear talks with European countries.
Moves to Watch
ConocoPhillips Selling Oklahoma Oil Assets for $1.3 Billion
ConocoPhillips is close to selling a big chunk of its oil and gas properties in Oklahoma, specifically those it got from Marathon Oil, for about $1.3 billion. The buyer is expected to be Stone Ridge Energy, and their partner company, Flywheel Energy, would then run these oil and gas operations.
These properties cover about 300,000 acres in Oklahoma's SCOOP and STACK areas and currently produce around 39,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. This sale is part of ConocoPhillips' plan to sell off some assets to help pay down debt after buying Marathon Oil.
