Global Oil & Gas News

Morningstar: Political Climate Has Little Impact on Oil, Gas Investments

In a recent report, Morningstar reassured oil and gas investors that electoral outcomes should not dictate their investment strategies. Analyzing nine presidential terms, the firm found no correlation between energy sector returns and the political party in power. They emphasized that valuation remains a more crucial indicator of performance than political factors. Morningstar also noted that U.S. oil and gas production growth has been driven more by capital efficiency and resource management than presidential policies. As the 2024 election approaches, the focus for investors should be on maintaining capital discipline rather than on political shifts.

Analysts Predict $350 Oil Price in Case of Hormuz Blockade

Concerns about potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical transit point for 21% of global oil supply, have resurfaced amid escalating tensions in the Israel-Iran conflict. While some analysts predict oil prices could skyrocket to over $300 per barrel if the strait is fully blocked, they largely consider such an event to be low probability. The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that existing pipeline capacity could only partially compensate for any disruption. Despite the high impact of a blockade on oil and natural gas markets, most experts remain skeptical about the likelihood of a serious escalation that would lead to significant supply chain disruptions.

Oil Prices Inch Up as Traders Eye Middle East Tensions

Oil prices began to recover on Wednesday after a Tuesday slump, as traders shifted their focus back to Middle East developments. A recent report suggested that Israel's possible approach to Iranian oil infrastructure has sparked speculation about changes in military strategy that could impact oil prices. Additionally, worries about weak consumer demand in China and a revised global oil demand forecast from the IEA have put further pressure on the market. Analysts observed that while there isn't a strong reason for prices to rise, any escalation in conflicts in the Middle East could affect supply dynamics, keeping traders vigilant. Move to Watch

Congo Cancels Oil and Gas Auction Due to Corruption Allegations

The Democratic Republic of Congo has canceled a significant auction for oil and gas drilling rights following allegations of corruption and preferential treatment. An investigation revealed issues such as irregular bids and a lack of qualified applicants, prompting Minister of Hydrocarbons Aimé Sakombi Molendo to halt the auction. Concerns were raised about its impact on sensitive areas, including parts of the Congo Basin, which is vital for carbon storage. Previous reports indicated that a company with no relevant experience had won a bid due to potential backroom deals. The government plans to relaunch the auction with revised rules to better protect vulnerable areas.
